About Gary

Where are You from?

From the city with a K, from the village around the cathedral. Or, short and sweet: from Cologne.

How Did You get into Doing Beer House Tours in Cologne?

I was looking for a way to tell people about the city, our culture, and our history. Through the Kölsch Crew, I got the chance to share my love for Cologne with a lot of joy.

Why Do You Enjoy Guiding People through Cologne’s Beer Houses so much?

Beer houses and Kölsch are as much a part of Cologne’s city history as the cathedral. The relaxed atmosphere makes it even more fun to tell people about it and have a great time together.

Which Anecdote or Story Do You Particularly like to Tell?

The story of Cardinal Frings. He asks his housekeeper to tell visitors he isn’t in. She, a strict Catholic, points to the Eighth Commandment—that you must not lie. The trick Cardinal Frings uses, and how he ultimately gets her to do it anyway, says a lot about Cologne and the people who live here.

What Makes Cologne Special for You?

“Live and let live” and “That’s how we all ended up here—today we all speak the same language. We’ve gained so much from it.”

What Absolutely Must You See in Cologne (besides the Cathedral)?

Definitely the Basilica of St. Maria im Kapitol. Just a stone’s throw from the hectic Heumarkt, you’ll find a peaceful place here with a beautiful basilica—and it all comes with a very important story for our city.

Fun Fact about You

I wasn’t born in Cologne.
